Every once in awhile, I get to see a neat exhibit at The Winnipeg Art Gallery. Unfortunately, they are few and far between and most of the paintings, sculptures and installations that I have seen have been around the world. I imagine that I could find someone new and exciting in New York every day. That would be rad.

James Cohan Gallery is proud to present an exhibition of important works by the late pioneer of video art, Nam June Paik, opening on April 14th and running through May 30. The exhibition consists of a number of works dating from 1972 to 1994, among them are Paik’s robot sculptures, live feed installations and other video sculptures.

A ‘must see’ site, the Karnak Temple Complex, was the first place Alex and I visited during our trip to Luxor.

Karnak is a open-air museum and monumental religious area. After the pyramids in Cairo, it is said to be one of the most frequented tourist areas in Egypt.

We are kinda dorky:

The temple of Karnak is famous for its 134 massive columns arranged in 16 rows in the Hypostyle Hall. 122 of these columns are 10 meters tall, and the other 12 are 21 meters tall with a diameter of over three meters. The architraves on top of these columns weigh an estimated 70 tons. (text via wikipedia)

The dogs aren’t dead. They’re just sleeping (I think):

I’m told that these grounds were featured in such movies as Tomb Raider and The Mummy Returns. I wouldn’t know for sure as I have not seem these films.

An obelisk commissioned by Queen Hatshepsut is on the grounds. The 320-700 tonne, 97 foot tall monolith involved 7 months of labor.

I couldn’t believe that the art on the wall had retained such vibrant color. The pictures I took really doesn’t do it any justice. Considering it is an open air museum that has been in existence since 16 century BC, the fact that the pigment has lasted is more than impressive. I suppose that it could have been re-touched over the years – but my understanding is that there has not been too much of an attempt of preservation.

‘Twas a fun day.

About a month ago, I had the pleasure of seeing the award-winning, one- woman play Marilyn: Forever Blonde .

Sunny Thompson is quite believable in her portrayal. I reckon that the play would be a lot more enjoyable and interesting if you were unfamiliar with her life story, as it seemed to rely on many of the scandalous tid-bits of her life to make the show exciting. The dialogue was a recollection of Marilyn’s life, in her own words. It wasn’t anything spectacular, but worth seeing if you’re a fan of the icon.
The Winnipeg Art Gallery was also exhibiting Marilyn: Life as a Legend.

Some of the art was pretty horrendous:

DD and MM, 2003, by Wolfgang Loesche.
There was the usual Warhol, the infamous Playboy shots and Bert Stern’s The Last Sitting and a lot of other classics.

Overall, due to the subject of the exhibit, it was fabulous. Who doesn’t love Marilyn?!

Alex and I met on October 31, 2003 at a mutual friend’s Hallowe’en party. We really liked each other but were too shy to do anything about it. We didn’t see each other again until April 2004 and were ‘friends’ for a week or two before we made it official on the 7th of May. I have had the best 5 years of my life.
Lurve, I love love love you – I know I tell you this everyday but now the world wide web knows…well, the 60 people who read this page everyday anyway…
{p.s. pause for hugs.}
